Sudie Williams Elementary

On Monday night Patricia Vermillion, The Lamplighter School’s librarian, made a visit to Sudie Williams Elementary School’s Reading Night for a writing workshop. Over 20 families attended the event.

Aside from being Lamplighter’s librarian, Vermillion is also a children’s book author. She read her 2013 book “Texas Chili? Oh My!” to students and their parents, and then discussed the process of writing a children’s book.

“What a rewarding experience,” Vermillion said. “The students and parents at Sudie Williams were very interested in the reading and writing process.”

Sudie Williams and Lamplighter are part of the COMMIT! partnership that aims to strengthen the academic skills of students in Dallas County. Dr. Joan Hill, Lamplighter’s Head of School, said the initiative is “intricately connected to Lamplighter’s literacy program with a goal to advance third grade reading scores.” The partnership includes other independent schools as well as public school districts throughout the D/FW area.

Michelle Staubach Grimes, a former Lamplighter Parent and daughter of former Dallas Cowboy Roger Staubach, joined Vermillion at Reading Night. Grimes’ book “Where is Pidge?” is scheduled to be released this month.
